NNOVEMBER 2008----At 14 ,491 ft above sea level Mt. Whitney , in California's Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains , is the tallest peak in the lower 48 of the U.S. It can be reached by Whitney Portal Rd. in Lone Pine ,Ca. The drive up from Lone Pine is incredible . Steep switchbacks and great views of the Owens Valley and the Alabama Hills below. As you drive up the road your views of Mt Whitney get better as the elevation climbs. Although at the end of the road you will not be able to see the Peaks of Mt. Whitney at all. There is a beautiful waterfall a small pond and a store at the end. You will have to put your food and drinks in a bear box in the parking area. This area ,as others in the Sierras , is known for bears getting into your car and doing alot of damage. This is the starting point for the hike to the peak . There is also a campground on the way up the road. No access in the winter as this area gets alot of snowfall. More photos of this area can be seen in the Mt. Whitney/Alabama Hills gallery.
