Based out of northern michigan.
I guess I can blame it on my parents for always taking me to the west when I was young.
I had liked taking pictures but never really expanded on it much with starting a family and such . But Approximately ten years ago I had a life changing string of events ,and was going thru some tough times family wise. I was left to find a new life and began to travel more. I really discovered a place that took away all the pain . Northern Ontario Canada. This is where I began to expand on my photography skills. I went up there (being 6-7 hours from home) alot . Over the years it became my place. I met alot of friends up there and still have those friendships today. One person who I really can thank ,is Jeanne Morgan @ White River Motel. I had visited them so much I felt at home there and it became a place to go during any season and they made me feel welcome.. Besides they had awesome snowmobile trails!!!! So one night Jeanne and I came up with this idea of taking pictures around her area .Being close to Lake Superior made for un ending picture potential. Those pictures would be enlarged as big as possible ,framed and matted, ultimately to end up on the walls in her motel. Those pictures are on her walls as of today. It is really cool going to a place and seeing your art on the wall. I would search out the weird things in nature like ice, moss ,mushrooms and of course waterfalls. I remember Jeanne telling me how different ,but intriguing, some of my shots were.
My friend Mike G . ,who I had worked with at the time , really got into taking pictures. I took Mike up there once and He was hooked . We then went on numerous roadtrips. Going from Ontario to Tennessee,North Carolina and even the Canadian Rockies.I swear I wore 2 vehicles out taking pictures with Mike . It was great to hang with someone who got nature and photography like I did. We would literally burn up 30 rolls of film in no time and begin searching for a store to get more. Did get expensive (the developing) But man did we see the country . Those were some great times. To this day Mike and I get together to shoot pictures. But we are in the digital age now!!
Then came the Canadian Rockies. My dad and I planned a trip in the fall of 2002 to go to Banff for the elk rut. What a place we discovered!!! That was the most awesome place I had ever been to.I had briefly went there 7 years earlier. But this visit got me started!! Five times in the next 6 years I went back. In 2003 I talked Mike into going even though he was skeptical on going for personal reasons. But it turned out to be a great trip.Saw so much wildlife!!! 12 grizzlies in one day!! Just couldn't get enough . It was a place that I just couldn't stop thinking about day after day. My brother and I then went back in 2004. Sierra and I then went back in 2005 and 2007. Wildlife ,waterfalls and mountains, what more could a photographer ask for. I plan to go back hopefully in the summer of 2010.
Then came California. I first visited Yosemite with my brother in the fall season 2006 ,and went back twice since(once with the waterfalls going). We really have found California to be the place for great weather and matching scenery.
Dan and I found Yosemite to be really awesome ,even though the waterfalls were dry. We had a great visit to California ,Oregon and Washington. .We headed up to Lassen and then decided to take the long journey to Mt Rainier/Mt St Helens. We hit the I-5 and headed north.Which wasn't actually in our itinerary. Those cascade peaks kept calling and I went back in the summer of 2007 and took my daughter to Olympic National Park on the Pacific Ocean. We then headed east to Glacier and once again up thru Waterton with a ultimate destination of Banff and Jasper. The weather on this trip was very testing especially in the canadian rockies,I guess my string of beautiful weather up there was bound to end. But we made the best of it even in a tent!! It wasn't about going there and taking pictures . It was about being with my daughter Sierra ,spending time with her in what we both knew was a beautiful and special place.
I really enjoy photographing waterfalls. I have seen and photographed so many I can't even count that high it seems. I found places like Northern Ontario,North Carolina ,the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Yosemite to be the hot spots for waterfalls.
I also like to visit the desert south west in the spring when it is still cold and damp at home because it is warm!!! And the Saguaro cactus . I find them so cool, everyone is different yet the same. And the birds!!!
Arizona and Utah became my spring break places ,I know most people go to warm beaches, Ken goes to the hot dry desert. With rattle snakes ,scorpions and tarantulas.
But going out there we discovered some incredible places to take pictures and hike. My daughters love for birds took us to some great areas and we have seen so many species of birds than I ever thought we would. To this day I will never forget the look in her eye when we found her favorite bird "The California Condor" , so many Hummingbirds and our first Vermillion Flycatcher along the San Pedro River in Arizona.
Now here towards the end of 2009 ,all the places I have been ,I still can't stop thinking about what the next adventure might be. Some of the people I have experienced these places with, have went on with there own lives. We still talk about the memories we shared on our quest for the best picture.
The question being:Would I be who I am today ,if it wasn't for my passion for photography. And what happened 10 years ago.The people who know me best know the answer to that.
